Messaging & Calls

Stay connected with direct messages, voice calls, and video calls.

Starting a conversation

To start a conversation, visit another user's profile or leaf and click the message button. You can also start a new conversation from the Messages section in your dashboard.

Conversations are direct between two users. You can have multiple active conversations.

Sending messages

Type your message in the input field and press Enter or click the send button. Messages are delivered in real time and stored so you can access your conversation history at any time.

Sharing media

You can share files in conversations using the attachment button. Supported file types include images (JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP), videos (MP4, WebM), audio (MP3, WAV, OGG), and documents. Files are uploaded securely and viewable directly in the conversation.

Voice input

If your browser supports it, you can use the microphone button to dictate messages using speech-to-text. This is especially handy on mobile or when you prefer speaking to typing. Currently supported in Chrome and Edge.

Message reactions

React to any message with an emoji by hovering over it (or long-pressing on mobile) and selecting a reaction. Reactions are visible to both participants in the conversation.

Read receipts

When someone reads your message, you'll see a read indicator. This helps you know when your messages have been seen.

Nudges

You can send a nudge to get someone's attention. The recipient will see a visual shake animation and hear a notification sound (if they have sounds enabled). Use nudges sparingly and respectfully.

Voice and video calls

Start a voice or video call from any conversation using the call buttons in the top right. When you start a call:

  • The other person receives a notification with an incoming call screen
  • Once they accept, you're connected in real time
  • Toggle your camera and microphone using the on-screen controls
  • Calls are powered by LiveKit for high-quality, low-latency communication

Call audio and video are not recorded or stored by crann.ai. Only call metadata (participants, duration, type) is stored.

Screen sharing

During a video call, you can share your screen using the screen share button. You can choose to share your entire screen, a specific window, or a browser tab. All participants in the call will see your shared screen in real time.

Screen sharing is live only and is not recorded. Stop sharing at any time by clicking the stop button.

Notifications and sounds

crann.ai plays sound notifications for incoming messages, calls, and when contacts come online. You can manage notification preferences in your settings.

If you use the iOS app, you'll receive push notifications for new messages and incoming calls even when the app is in the background.
